Decentring and Diversifying Southeast Asian Studies

English | 2011 | ISBN: 9814311561, 981431157X | PDF | pages: 317 | 5.8 mb
Current critical thinking on regions outside the West appear to be motivated by the limitations of Western discourse in comprehending the variation of human experiences and paths of modernity. This book represents part of the effort to decentre and diversify the future of area studies in the current politics of knowledge production. It presents dilemmas encountered by Southeast Asian intellectuals and their ethical recourse as they respond to the critique of area studies and political-economic and cultural reconfigurations around them.

Dancing Girl a history of early India
Free Download Balaji Sadasivan, "Dancing Girl: a history of early India"
English | 2011 | ISBN: 9814311677 | PDF | pages: 336 | 32.0 mb
This book provides valuable insight on the history of India from ancient times to 1600 CE for Indians and non-Indians, and for the Indian Diaspora, which is estimated to be over 25 million, spreading across no less than 110 countries. The chapters cover many important aspects of history, from the ancient urban culture of the Indus Valley Civilization; Vedic Age's lasting legacy, Hinduism associated with the two great epics, the Ramayana and Mahabharata; and the founding of Buddhism and Jainism; to the Muslim conquests and the resultant Indo-Islamic and Mughal heritage. Indian influence travelled beyond its shores to Southeast Asia, China, Korea and Japan. The Angkor Wat, Borobudur and Prambanan temples reflect the cultural impact of the early Indian Diaspora. The famous Chinese monk Xuanzang who journeyed to Nalanda to study at that great University wrote extensively about India. This book will kindle interest in research on tracing the origins of the Indian Diaspora and the ancient ties that linked India to the rest of the world.

English | 2010 | ISBN: 9814279676 | PDF | pages: 183 | 11.0 mb
Southeast Asia witnessed a wide array of policy actions at the regional and international levels to unravel the ripple effects of the global economic downturn and to set the stage for a long-term recovery. Yet the quest for regional and global solutions has been hampered critically by the complication of individual economies and the diverse levels of economic development. The objective of this book is to examine in-depth region-specific research on how macroeconomic tools are at work in the Southeast Asian economies.

Costs and Benefits of Cross-Country Labour Migration in the
Free Download Hossein Jalilian, "Costs and Benefits of Cross-Country Labour Migration in the"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 9814311898, 9814345334 | PDF | pages: 440 | 10.1 mb
International labour migration can be characterised in three ways - as human aspiration, tradition, and necessity. For some people, working overseas is a dream. For others, international labour mobility is a tradition. For a great number of people, however, international labour migration is an economic necessity. It is the only viable solution to realise their basic human right to a decent life. GMS worker movements to Thailand typify all three characterisations of international labour mobility. While this book focuses on the economic dimensions of international labour emigration, principally from Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam to Thailand, it recognises at the very outset the equal standing of non-economic motivations for migration.

Chinese Schools in Peninsular Malaysia The Struggle for Survival
Free Download Lee Ting Hui, "Chinese Schools in Peninsular Malaysia: The Struggle for Survival"
English | 2011 | ISBN: 9814279218 | PDF | pages: 298 | 4.5 mb
The history of modern Chinese schools in Peninsular Malaysia is a story of conflicts between Chinese domiciled there and different governments that happened or happen to rule the land. Before the days of the Pacific War, the British found the Chinese schools troublesome because of their pro-China political activities. They established measures to control them. When the Japanese ruled the Malay Peninsula, they closed down all the Chinese schools. After the Pacific War, for a decade, the British sought to convert the Chinese schools into English schools. The Chinese schools decoupled themselves from China and survived. A Malay-dominated government of independent Peninsular Malaysia allowed Chinese primary schools to continue, but finally changed many Chinese secondary schools into National Type Secondary Schools using Malay as the main medium of instruction. Those that remained independent, along with Chinese colleges, continued without government assistance. The Chinese community today continues to safeguard its educational institutions to ensure they survive.
